Activities
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) was established in 1949 as an
independent office attached to the Department of the Taoiseach.
Since 1994 the CSO has operated under the Statistics Act, 1993.
The CSO collects, compiles, analyses and disseminates statistical
information relating to the economic, social and general
activities and conditions of life in Ireland.
It is also responsible for the co-ordination of official
statistics compiled by other public authorities and for developing
the statistical potential of administrative records.
The CSO provides the government with high quality statistical
information which is used in the formation, implementation and
monitoring of policy and programmes at national, regional and
local levels. Other users of the statistical data produced are
international organisations including the European Union, the
business sector, media, research institutes and universities, the
general public and other statistical users.
All information supplied to the CSO is treated as strictly
confidential. No details supplied can be related to an
identifiable person or business services.
The principal statistics produced by the Central Statistics Office
include the following: Agriculture, Building, Census of
Population, Consumer Price Index, Distribution, Earnings,
Employment, Finance, Industry, Inflation, Labour, National
Accounts, Prices, Services, Trade, Transport, Tourism,
Unemployment, and Vital Statistics (births, deaths and marriages).
The CSO disseminates the statistical data through various services
including daily update of the Website and the Database Direct
Service. Both a four-month advance calendar and a weekly
announcement are published to advise the public of forthcoming
publications. While CSO publishes as much data as is practical in
it's publications and releases, the specialist requirements of
some customers may not be met. To satisfy these requirements the
CSO will provide, on a fee basis, special series and analyses
tailored to individual users.
