Company Profile
Repak is Ireland's first voluntary initiative between industry and
the Department of the Environment designed to meet industry's
producer responsibility obligations under the EU directive on
packaging and packaging waste (94/62/EC) and the subsequent Waste
Management (Packaging) Regulations 2007.
The legislation aims to increase the level of recovery and
recycling in Ireland in order to reach the targets set by European
Parliament. Under the Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations,
certain obligations were placed on companies that have a turnover
of more than E 1 million and that place 10 tonnes or more
packaging onto the Irish market.
Repak offers compliance with the regulations on a calendar year
basis (Jan - Dec) to all business entities involved in the supply
chain. It assumes all legal responsibilities for the recovery and
recycling of used packaging from the household and commercial
sectors on behalf of its 2,200 members. Annual membership fees
are used to fund, support and promote packaging recycling
initiatives throughout the country.
Repak and its members have succeeded in reaching and exceeding
Ireland's EU national packaging recovery and recycling target of
25% of packaging waste in 2001 and also the 2005 EU packaging
recovery target of 50%. The next target to be achieved is 60%
recovery of used packaging by 2011.
